Poetry is not action, nor passion, nor thought. It contains all of these, carelessly as it were; but, in a true instance, when these qualities have been eliminated, there remains yet a quality, and that residue is poetry. Nor is it correct to say that a “residue” remains – an excess remains, and that excess is poetry
